Bal on the Tyne – June Edition

Save the Date – Swing Tyne at The Globe

Save the date! Swing Tyne are thrilled to be part of The Globe’s 10 Years a Co-Op Festival on Sunday 28th April.

The Globe is an independent grassroots music venue in Newcastle which hosts over 30 gigs a month alongside workshops and courses for musicians, songwriters and dancers. On 30th April 2014 they became the first pub/venue in the UK to be owned and run by a cooperative dedicated to live music.

Swing Tyne will be involved in teaching some lessons and on Sunday 28th April there will be a gig from New Orleans Swing Jazz band Alligator Gumbo, followed by dj’ing from our very own Elise

Submit your feedback for the Swing Tyne AGM

A reminder for everyone to join us at our Annual General Meeting on February 26th. The meeting will start at 19:30, providing a unique opportunity for all to support our dedicated committee members and gain insights into the inner workings of our organization.

On this evening, there will be no scheduled lessons, allowing us to focus on the AGM proceedings. It’s a chance for our community to come together, share ideas, and contribute to the continued growth of our scene.

After the meeting we will have social dancing until 22:30

Please submit any issues you would like to raise using the form below. You can also volunteer for committee positions. The form has three sections:

Sweet & Slow: Slow Swing Dance Workshop

Sunday 10th March 2024

Anders and Hilary will share their love for dancing slow in our March workshop. Covering slow lindy hop over two classes as well as slow balboa and one step. Find the joy in the extra time to explore movement, musicality and connection.

Class starts 11am with lunch break at 1.45-2.15pm finishing at 4pm. Doors open at 1030am.

Tickets: £15 (£10 for concession)

Classes are held at Summerhill Bowling Club where limited parking is available and kitchen including microwave available at lunch time.

Tea and coffee will be provided.

This workshop is suitable for anyone who has done some classes in swing dancing before, we welcome people of all levels of experience to join. You need to have a small repetoire of moves that you are confident in. Participants will need to be comfortable to dance in close embrace position.

Tickets will be released very soon via dancecloud! Save the date and stay tuned. Tickets will be released at 6pm on 29th January. Book early to avoid disappointment!

Swing Tyne’s Next Balboa Workshop – Feb 10th & 11th, 2024

  • 8 hours of Pure Bal, Bal Swing, and a Slow Bal taster class.
  • Saturday evening social event with a guest speaker.

  • Intermediate Plus Dancers only.

Schedule:

  • Saturday: 10:30 – 17:00, Social 19:00 – 22:45.
  • Sunday: 12:30 – 17:30, Tea dance till 19:00.

Tickets Now Available for Rob & Tina Balboa Workshop in January

Tickets are now on sale for our January Balboa workshop with Rob & Tina from Swing Dance Leeds

4 hours of Balboa ( Pure Bal and Bal swing) Lessons followed by a social

Rob & Tina Shield are our guest Balboa teachers from Swing Dance Leeds and have many years experience of teaching between them. 

For Tina Social dancing has always been her focus and she encourages people to dance for the pure joy of doing it. Rob has been dancing since 2005 and has travelled around the UK and Europe to learn from some of the greatest teachers from the 1930s and today. This 4 hour workshop (Plus breaks and social practise/dance) is aimed at the Improver plus/ Intermediate(you will have been taking lessons for the last year and dancing regularly at social events). You may already have attended other Balboa workshops. No partners are required as we will rotate.

It will cover lessons in both Pure Bal and Bal Swing. 

You will be expected to dance as a lead/follower/switch as per your booked ticket.

Please bring a spare shirt/socks/ a water bottle and wear flat leather sole shoes(no rubber soles).

There will be tea/coffee/juice provided as well as water and please bring your own mug. There is a microwave for those who wish to heat up their own food(no meals are provided).

Free Carparking is on-site.

No refunds will be given and No tickets are to be resold( you can re-allocate your ticket).Swing Tyne will try to sell your place and if successful a refund will be issued( up till the 2nd January 2024).

Concession prices are for those who are students/unemployed and we ask that anyone who can afford the standard priced tickets to purchase a standard price one. We are a not for profit charity so every £ paid is used for our dancing community.

Last Few Tickets Available for our Lindy Hop Winter Workshop

On 2nd December at the John Marley Centre we will have Jeff Tong & Marco Mazza teaching a 4 hour Lindy hop workshop followed by an evening social with Tenement Jazz band!

Jeff and Marco are two great dancers based in London, they are known in the Lindy Hop scene for their appreciation of jazz music how much they value the characteristics of this dance. In this workshop we will explore greater connection with the music, your partner and yourself, feelings and expressions over specific moves and most importantly having fun!

This Lindy Hop workshop is ideal for people who have been dancing actively for the past year or so, taking both lessons and dancing socially.

Come this workshop in December, you should have a good grasp of both 6 and 8 count Lindy Hop. Tuck turns, swing outs, pass-by’s, inside/outside turns and promenades are all moves you do regularly.

4 hours of lessons and the evening dance are included in the ticket price.

Tenement Jazz Band will be playing some great sets for us in the evening, many of you will have seen and heard on the toon! The venue is BYOB, there is plenty of parking and if you are planning to drive, please let others know so we can coordinate car shares!

Tickets now Available- Peter & Aila Collegiate Shag Workshop

We’re so excited to announce that we’ll be hosting a Collegiate Shag Workshop with Peter Ayres & Aila Floyd on Sat 4th November 2023!

The workshop will be at:

St Matthews Church,11 Summerhill St, Newcastle upon Tyne NE4 6EJ

Classes will be run by Peter Ayres & Aila Floyd, two great dancers who have been working together for more than 10 years, and help run and teach classes at Shag Pile (London).

No dance partner is required.

The class format will be up to 4 hours of classes in total with regular breaks and a break for lunch ( not provided), followed by a tea dance!( Cakes provided)

Hot drinks & snacks will be provided. There is a kitchen with access to hot & cold water (to fill up a water bottle if you would like to bring your own) and if possible bring your own mug for the hot drinks.

Please bring leather soled shoes (not rubber heeled) spare socks and a change of shirt -always goes down well.

Announcing Our Autumn Programme of Classes

Starting on Monday 4th September 📆

Lindy Hop , Collegiate Shag, Charleston & Balboa dance lessons

Two dance styles are taught each week. We will start with Lindy Hop and Balboa on Monday 4th September and then Balboa and Shag will alternate every other week.

Week 1,3,5,7 Balboa & Lindy/Charleston
Week 2,4,6,7 Shag & Lindy/Charleston

Doors open at 19.15 for social dancing and warm ups. Doors close 22.30.

No partner required as we rotate partners.

We begin at 2 venues, 2 minutes apart on Monday 4th September.

At St Mathews ( 200yds away from Summer Hill)
19.30 Balboa for new people/ fundamentals
20.25 Balboa for improvers

Summerhill Bowling Club (car parking)
19.30 Lindy hop for improvers
20.25 Lindy hop for new people/ fundamentals

Social dancing from 21.15 to 22.30 and we
will finish with steals and Jams!

The syllabus is made up of 4 progressive lessons covering the basics of connection, footwork and rhythm.

We would recommend that everyone completes the new people/ fundamentals lessons twice to understand the basics and core techniques.

You can drop in at any point in the 4 lesson program as we do a short recap at the beginning of each weeks lesson. We don’t go over all the technique in detail, however you are never more than a few weeks away from the beginning of the program so stick with it and join the next round from the start.

For the whole evening of 2 lessons and the social dance it’s only £7.
