What’s On: WC 29/04/2024

Firstly, before I tell you what’s on this week, I want to mention that we have a fundamentals Lindy Hop Workshop on the 25th of May!

We are running an intermediate Lindy workshop in July and this fundamental workshop is a brilliant way to ensure you have the understanding required to attend the intermediate workshop.

There are a few swing events happening at The Globe this evening.

This afternoon, there will be swing dance tasters taught by Alec and Ola. These are free but you do need to register for them. You can register here.

Tonight, at The Globe, there will be danceable music provided by Alligator Gumbo. Tickets for that can be purchased here.

And after Alligator Gumbo, there will be music, which is DJ-d by our very own Elise Hopper!

Now, onto this week’s lessons!

This week, we have Balboa and Lindy lessons.

FUNdamentals Bal is at 19:30 and runs until 20:10
Improvers Bal is at 20:20 and runs until 21:00

Lessons are followed by social dancing at Summerhill from 21:00

Dance Events Happening This Weekend (27/04/2024)

We have a few events happening this weekend!

Firstly, this Saturday (27/04/2024), it is Bal Brunch at Holy Hobo!
This is a fantastic way to social dance to faster songs and work on Balboa and Shag skills.

Secondly!
This weekend marks 10 Years of The Globe being a co-operative venue (one of the only ones in the UK) and to celebrate, there’s a few swing things going on!
Sunday afternoon has a few swing things including some free dance tasters lead by Alec and Ula:

  • 2pm – 3pm is a shag taster session
  • 3pm – 4pm is a lindy hop taster

    If you are interested in attending these, you do need to book and can do so here.

    Sunday Evening has music provided by Alligator Gumbo! This will absolutely be danceable music and tickets for this can be booked here.

    Alligator Gumbo is followed by a DJ set by our very own Elise Hopper and this is free entry!

Lindy lessons are around Summerhill, Shag lessons are St Matthew’s Church Hall.

This week, we have live music provided by The Magpies of Swing and we will have a photographer present who will be taking photos for our website. Please let us know if you do not want your photo taken.

20/04/2024:
Beginner and Improver’s Collegiate Shag Workshop!

This wonderful entry level workshop will be lead by our own Rachael, Joel, Hilary and Simon and will cover the fundamentals of this fun dance!

This workshop can be a great way for you to further your technique, or if you are familiar with the style, you can use it as an opportunity to learn the role you don’t normally dance!

Lindy Hop Workshop – Beginners/Improvers

Saturday 25th May 10:30-18:00

Classes will be run by Swing Tyne teachers: Rachel and Hilary & Jordan and Owen.

The workshop is designed for both beginners and improvers (Dancers who have been dancing for less than 1 year and also those that want to improve/hone their technique). Or, an opportunity to learn the alternative role to your norm or switch!

These will be progressive and ensure that everyone attending will benefit.

We will explore fundamental techniques, movement, connection, musicality and variations that will enhance your individual level of dancing.

No dance partner is required however a balance of leads and followers is needed so there may be a wait list until an opposite role is booked.

The cost of this event will be £15 per person (£7.50 for concessions)

Tickets can only be pre-purchased to ensure that we are within the capacity of the hall. Book via the dance cloud link.

Dancers attending this 1 day workshop should then have all the skills ready for the improvers/intermediate workshop we are planning for later in the year.

The class format will be up to 5 hours of classes in total with regular breaks and lunch, followed by 2 hours of social dancing where you can hone and practice your moves.

Tea/Coffee and water will be provide.

Please bring leather soled shoes (not rubber heeled) spare socks and a change of shirt always goes down well if you have been putting in a lot of effort and being considerate of your dance partners.

Concession prices are for those who find it difficult to afford the event (no/low income as an example) and we ask that anyone who can afford the standard priced tickets please purchase one. We are a not for profit charity so every £ paid is used for our dancing community.

No refunds will be given and No tickets are to be resold (you can re-allocate your ticket). Swing Tyne will try to sell your place and if successful a refund will be issued (up until the 18th May 2024).

Shag on the Tyne April Edition – Beginners/Improvers

Teachers

All Classes will be run by Swing Tyne teachers.

Level

The classes are designed for both beginners and improvers (Dancers who have been dancing for less than 1 year and also those that want to improve/hone their technique). Or, an opportunity to learn the alternative role to your norm or switch!

These will be progressive and ensure that everyone attending will benefit.

We will explore fundamental techniques, movement, connection, quality of dance, core shag vocabulary, and variations that will enhance your individual level of dancing.

No dance partner is required however a balance of leads and followers is needed so there may be a wait list until an opposite role is booked.

Cost

The cost of this event will be £15 per person (£7.50 for concessions)

Timetable & Schedule

The class format will be 5 x 50 minutes of classes, with regular breaks and lunch, followed by up to an hour and a half of social dancing where you can hone and practice your moves!

Facilities

Tea/Coffee and water will be provide.

We recommend bringing your own Lunch (no lunch provided) as local cafes/shop are limited and the lunch break will be 45 minutes.

Please bring Slippery soled shoes for dancing. Spare socks and a change of shirt always goes down well if you have been putting in a lot of effort and being considerate of your dance partners (and maybe some deodorant).

Concessions

Concession prices are for those who are students/unemployed/ low waged, and we ask that anyone who can afford the standard priced tickets please purchase one. We are a non-profit charity so every £ paid is used for our dancing community.

Save the Date – Swing Tyne at The Globe

Save the date! Swing Tyne are thrilled to be part of The Globe’s 10 Years a Co-Op Festival on Sunday 28th April.

The Globe is an independent grassroots music venue in Newcastle which hosts over 30 gigs a month alongside workshops and courses for musicians, songwriters and dancers. On 30th April 2014 they became the first pub/venue in the UK to be owned and run by a cooperative dedicated to live music.

Swing Tyne will be involved in teaching some lessons and on Sunday 28th April there will be a gig from New Orleans Swing Jazz band Alligator Gumbo, followed by dj’ing from our very own Elise

Submit your feedback for the Swing Tyne AGM

A reminder for everyone to join us at our Annual General Meeting on February 26th. The meeting will start at 19:30, providing a unique opportunity for all to support our dedicated committee members and gain insights into the inner workings of our organization.

On this evening, there will be no scheduled lessons, allowing us to focus on the AGM proceedings. It’s a chance for our community to come together, share ideas, and contribute to the continued growth of our scene.

After the meeting we will have social dancing until 22:30

Sweet & Slow: Slow Swing Dance Workshop

Sunday 10th March 2024

Anders and Hilary will share their love for dancing slow in our March workshop. Covering slow lindy hop over two classes as well as slow balboa and one step. Find the joy in the extra time to explore movement, musicality and connection.

Class starts 11am with lunch break at 1.45-2.15pm finishing at 4pm. Doors open at 1030am.

Tickets: £15 (£10 for concession)

Classes are held at Summerhill Bowling Club where limited parking is available and kitchen including microwave available at lunch time.

Tea and coffee will be provided.

This workshop is suitable for anyone who has done some classes in swing dancing before, we welcome people of all levels of experience to join. You need to have a small repetoire of moves that you are confident in. Participants will need to be comfortable to dance in close embrace position.

Tickets will be released very soon via dancecloud! Save the date and stay tuned. Tickets will be released at 6pm on 29th January. Book early to avoid disappointment!
