Sunday Swing Out tomorrow at The Cluny!

Shake off the end-of-week-blues with our brand new, swingin’ Sunday afternoon social!

Join Swing Tyne for a free swing dance taster class, then swing out to a live set from Magpies of Swing, plus DJs playing the hottest dance music of the 1920s, ’30s, ’40s and ’50s – big band swing, jazz manouche, jumpin’ jive, rockin’ rhythm ‘n’ blues.

Doors midday, taster class 12.30, band about 1.30, finish about 4!

Fully-licensed bar, non-dancers welcome.

Easington Social Dance – Featuring The Magpies of Swing

This Saturday, picking up from Paula and Toni’s legendary swing dance night, DJ Murray Rose will be hosting a new night of dancing at the Easington Minners Welfare Hall- featuring live music from your favourites, the Magpies of Swing!

Originally built in 1929 in the heart of the former mining community, with state of the art dance floor- one of the biggest sprung dance floors in County Durham- the centre still remains open providing vital facilities for its community.

Murray Rose is the selector, bring the choicest sides from 1920s, 30s, 40s and 50s, including jazz, swing and blues, all perfect for cutting some rug!

The Magpies of Swing are a collective of swing dancers, making music for you to dance to. “Giving the hits and near-misses of the ’20s, ’30s and ’40s the hottest work out since the Palomar Ballroom in L.A. burnt down(*)”, the Magpies play tunes and songs from Duke Ellington and Count Bassie, Ella Fitzgerald and Fats Waller and more besides.

DUSS October Ball 2025 – Sat Oct 18th

Put this event in your calendars now! Our friends at DUSS are hosting a night of social dancing featuring live music from the Magpies of Swing

Tickets are now on sale for the DUSS October Ball! All swing dancers of all levels are invited. This event is aimed at giving newbies a taste of a proper social dance! So please come along and show off your skills, and dance with lots of our new beginners too.

Snacks will be provided but please bring some food or non-alcoholic drinks for the sharing table if you can.

This week at Swing Tyne

This week at Swing Tyne we have our normal Lindy Hop and Balboa classes at Summerhill and St Matthew’s. Both fundamentals classes are suitable for complete beginners so now is a great time to try something new!

Sadly there will be no live music for social dancing but the Magpies will return in October!

Don’t forget that Hoodoo Blues Belta Blues weekend is this week as well, featuring top teachers and great live blues music for 3 nights at The Globe

This workshop on Saturday 27th Sept is aimed at both beginners and improvers (dancers with less than a year of experience and those who want to work on improving their technique) and will include a deep dive on swingout technique, variations, and some new Lindy Hop moves. The workshop will be taught by Owen and Elise from Swing Tyne

Coming up at Swing Tyne – Autumn 2025

We hope everyone enjoyed our Summer Program this year which has covered Tap, Blues, Lindyhop, Collegiate Shag, Balboa and Mamma’s Stew.

We have lots of events coming up over the next few months so take a look below for details for your diary:

  • Sunday August 31st – Bal Brunch (FREE) – As You Like It, Jesmond, NE21DB
  • Monday September 1st – Return of classes at both Summerhill (Blues taster) and St Matthews (Balboa) and the end of our summer program.
  • Saturday 27th September – Beginner’s Lindyhop Workshop – Save the date, more details to follow
  • Saturday 1st November – St Louis Shag at St Matthews – Save the date, more details to follow
  • Saturday 6th December – Swing Tyne Xmas Social (TBC) – Save the date, more details to follow

Also, remember to make a note of our monthly regular events

  • Revolution de Swing at Revolution de Cuba on the 2nd Thursday of the month (Free), keep a look out for upcoming dates soon
  • Live band “Magpies of Swing” on the 3rd Monday of the month at Summerhill (Donations), starting from September 15th
  • Balboa/Shag Brunch on the last Sunday of the month (Free)

St Louis Shag Workshop

Balboa – October Series Improvers and Intermediates Workshop

The classes are designed for both improvers  and intermediate (Dancers who have been dancing for more than 1 year and also those that want to improve/hone their technique). Or, an opportunity to learn the alternative role to your norm or switch! You will need to know some basic moves to have the best experience (Basic up/down hold with variations, come a rounds, throw-outs and pop turns as these will not be taught).

The workshop will be at:- St Mathews Church Hall, 11 Summerhill Street, Newcastle upon Tyne NE46EJ (where we hold weekly balboa and colligate shag classes) It is permit parking round the hall but there is a free carpark 300 m away at NE46HL off Colby Court.

Classes will be run by your Swing Tyne teachers Sarah, Graeme & others TBC.

These will be progressive and ensure that everyone attending will benefit.

Of course, we will explore fundamental techniques and also cover Pure Balboa, throw–out variations, Grape vines, Crossovers and Flow. 

No dance partner is required as we will rota partners however a balance of leads and followers is required so there may be a wait list until an opposite role is booked. 

The cost of this event will be £15 per person (£7.50 for concessions)

Tickets can only be pre-purchased to ensure that we are within the capacity of the hall. Book via the dance cloud link.

Dancers attending this 1day workshop should then have all the skills ready for the intermediate weekend workshop we’re planning for late January with guest teachers

The class format will be 5 hours of classes in total with regular breaks and a lunch break with 60 minutes social dance at the end where you can hone and practice your moves learnt.

Tea/Coffee and water will be provided. However, we do recommend bringing your own lunch with you as there are just a few Cafes nearby.

Please bring leather soled shoes (not rubber heeled) spare socks and a change of shirt always goes down well if you have been putting in a lot of effort and being considerate of your dance partners.

Concession prices are for those who are students/unemployed, and we ask that anyone who can afford the standard priced tickets please purchase one. We are a not-for-profit charity so every £ paid is used for our dancing community.

No refunds will be given, and No tickets are to be resold (you can re-allocate your ticket). Swing Tyne will try to sell your place and if successful a refund will be issued (up until the September 30th 2025).
