First Time – FAQs

Welcome to Swing Tyne! This page is for people coming (or thinking about coming) for the first time. Please have a quick read through and if you have any questions, please have a chat to the either the teachers or the door volunteers when you arrive.

Who can come?

Anyone. We are a really welcoming community open to all. The only restriction, for safeguarding and insurance reasons, is that you need to be at least 18 years old.

When and where is it?

Every Monday evening. For more information see our Lessons & Social page

How much does it cost?

Your first time is free. Thereafter, for weekly classes there is a small charge for two lessons with concessions available. For more details see Lessons & Socials

I have two left feet!

It’s not just you – all of our teachers have been there too! Some steps are easier than others but generally it is just a matter of time. Our beginners class always start with the first steps you need to take. Don’t get frustrated – the secret is that advanced dancers are just constantly (ahem) “styling their own mistakes out” with a smile on their face. After a few weeks you will be surprised how far you have come.

Do I need a partner?

No. Anyone can come and our classes encourage dancing with different partners. Changing partners and mixing with more and less experienced dancers can really help you learn moves and techniques. We love dancing, so at our socials don’t be afraid to ask anyone at Swing Tyne to dance and don’t be surprised that people may ask you to dance, even if it is your first time.

What should I wear?

We recommend that you wear something you feel comfortable in. Flat shoes are a good choice as even in the first class you may do turns. With the exception of dance shoes, high-heeled shoes are not practical when starting out. We have a longer health guide here: Health Awareness

Are there any rules?

Play nice! We have a code of conduct. Please give it a read. It covers things like safety, history, personal boundaries and that it is okay to say no to a dance. We also have a simplified practical guide on our Welfare page.

What if I have concerns?

We want everyone to feel absolutely comfortable and safe at any of our events. We have two welfare officers and we recommend that everyone read the code of conduct on Welfare page. It sets out expectations and friendly etiquette advice for participants and teachers. It also fully details how to seek help if there is a problem and how we will address issues.
