About the classes
8 hours of classes throughout the weekend.
Classes will be at The Beacon on Westgate Road: http://www.thebeaconnewcastle.co.uk/
Two streams of classes will run:
Sand Dancer level
You’re not totally new to Shag, but keen to make your mark on this awesome dance!
You’re at the point where dancing Shag socially is an exciting concept because you’re wanting to throw these new things you’re learning onto the floor.
You will most likely have been attending Shag classes for a little while and you’re itching to learn more.
Your familiarity with the basics is building your confidence in shifting between 6 count double basic and 8 count moves and variations are starting to be part of your ever expanding repertoire of moves.
Byker Groover level
You’ve been dancing Shag a while, and you’ve developed a strong foundation on which you keep building!
You’re now dancing Shag regularly both socially and in many classes, you may even have performed it; you’re getting really comfortable with your technique and how to play with the music you’re dancing to.
Transitioning between 6 and 8 count moves is no problem to you and you’re able to vary your movement to fit both your partner and the music.
You should probably have attended a workshop or two and you’re now happy dancing at speed.
You’re really keen to take your Shag to the next level and this is going to be exactly where to get going.
Unclear which level to book onto?- drop us an email at email@example.com.
There will also be some fun tasters at the end of each day to choose from – you can either do Shag all weekend or try something a little different each day for one of your classes!
About the teachers
Stephen Sayer is a dancer/instructor who is dedicated to preserving the great American partner jazz dances of the 1920′s-1950′s. Originally from Dayton, Ohio Steve began dancing in 1998 at the age of 16. Falling in love with lindy hop and other dances of the swing era he traveled to the east and west-coasts to dance, study and learn the different styles of swing dancing. In 2012 Stephen was inducted into the California Swing Dance Hall of Fame, and has won numerous Shag and Lindy championships including Collegiate Shag, Open Strictly Lindy and International Lindy.
Today Steve travels the world teaching Shag and Smooth Style Lindy with partner Chandrae Roettig. He is committed to improving and pushing the limits of his own dancing as well as those who take his classes. His focus of connection to partner and music are what makes his dancing and teaching so unique.
Chandrae (Chanzie) Roettig
Chanzie’s background in Jazz, Hip Hop, Modern, Contemporary, Ballet and Theater Dance Styles, enables her to bring a sparkly energetic athleticism to her swing dancing. Since connecting with Swing Dancing in 2007, Chanzie has developed her passion for every vintage style under the umbrella of swing and preserving it’s history.
Chanzie has worked with some of LA’s top choreographers in film, television, music and stage. Winning many national swing dance titles, she along with Stephen Sayer are sought out globally for their unique teaching. Enjoying success at a National level with performance groups since 2012, they continue to spread the joy of Smooth Style Lindy and Collegiate Shag in a big way! Known for her cheerful and playful attitude, Chanzie is a joy to watch, dance with and learn from.

Minn is one of LA’s favorite competitors and without a doubt one of the most versatile performers in swing dancing today. Inducted into the California Swing Dance Hall of Fame in 2004, he excels in all areas of Vernacular Jazz Dance, including Collegiate Shag, Lindy Hop, Charleston, Balboa, Air Steps, and has an extensive influence on the contemporary movement of urban street dance.
His competition background stems from a long history of 1st place titles in the local, national, and world competition circuit since 1997 including America Lindy Hop Championships, Nation Jitterbug Championships, US Open Lindy Hop Championships, Harlem Jazz Festival, California Balboa-Swing Championships, and many more.
He has made him mark in TV commercials, film, and music videos, and is the founder of LA performance group Hollywood Hotshots. A renowned instructor when opportunity allows, a rare opportunity to catch Minn teaching in the UK.
Hailing from Los Angeles, California, Fancy fell in love with jazz, lindy hop and shag in 2008. She’s been hooked ever since, devoting herself to the technical mastery of historical dances and her own unique style. She has appeared in music videos, and been on numerous television shows for the US, Mexico and France. She currently lives in Paris, where she teaches with partner Alex Dreyer and also enjoys the local pastries. Fancy holds titles in fast lindy and shag. She was nominated for the California Swing Dance Hall of Fame in 2014 and is the four-time shag champion (2010, 2011, 2012, and 2014) of the National Jitterbug Championships with shag partner Steve Sayer.
